LastQuake is a mobile application dedicated to alerting populations and collecting real-time testimonies during earthquakes. Created by seismologists, LastQuake is the official app of the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC). With the help of its users, the EMSC can quickly estimate the effects of earthquakes and notify the population.

An Innovative Earthquake Detection Method

The EMSC uses two primary methods to detect earthquakes:

• Earthquake witnesses, who are the first to feel an earthquake and therefore the first to be informed that an event is occurring.
• Internet and mobile technologies, which allow for the rapid collection of information on the effects observed by witnesses. Witnesses are asked to fill out questionnaires and share photos and videos.
